408,374 NW covid cases as five areas record biggest week-on-week rate rise

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases across the North West has passed the 400,000 mark for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

More than 40,000 new infections have been recorded across Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cumbria in the last week despite the move to Tier 4 restrictions and then a national lockdown earlier this week.

In the last 24 hours another 1,489 cases were recorded in Lancashire, 404 in Cumbria, 354 in Manchester, 854 in Liverpool and 531 in Cheshire.

Infection rates have also risen across every local authority in the region with five parts of the North West named in the top 10 biggest week-on-week rises in the country.

Carlisle’s infection rate now stands at 1039.8 cases per 100,000 people after 1130 people contracted the virus in the seven days to January 3. This is up from a rate of 509.8 the previous week.

Halton has the next highest rate in the North West followed by Knowsley, Burnley and Wirral.

It comes after the UK saw a record rise in deaths since April with a total of 1,162 deaths in all settings.

It marks the second largest single-day increase in recorded deaths during the course of the pandemic, with only April 21 seeing a higher figure of 1,224 deaths.

Cases have risen by 52,618 as the country remains in the grip of the devastating spike in infections.

These are the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus by North West area as of Thursday, January 7:
