A66 closed: Lorry fire shuts road in both directions at Scotch Corner as smoke fills the air

The A66 is closed in both directions after a lorry has burst into flames.

The fire has closed the road in both directions between Bowes (A67) and Scotch Corner (A1M). The lorry has caught fire at the Melsonby turn off.

The road closure is affecting traffic moving in both directions and affecting anyone travelling towards Appleby ready for Appleby Horse Fair on Thursday. One eyewitness, who is near the front of the traffic, said that people further back are trying to find alternative routes.

AA Traffic Map said: “Road closed and slow traffic due to truck fire on A66 both ways from Moor Road to A1(M) J53 (Scotch Corner).”

Emergency services, including North Yorkshire Police are in attendance. Traffic is currently being diverted.

National Highways said diversions are in place:

  • Eastbound – via the A67 eastbound towards Darlington – and then either north on the A68 or south on the A66M, to re-join the A1M.
  • Westbound – follow the above route, roads in reverse order.

A spokesperson said: “Delays are likely on the approach to this closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes.”
