Cumbria pub named among best in UK launches heaty pie nights as weather gets colder

As winter sweeps in and the nights get colder and shorter, most people are looking for a hearty meal to tuck into and warm themselves up.

And what could be better than a crispy golden pie fresh out of the oven or the gentle warming heat of a delicious curry bursting with flavour? There’s no doubt in the mind of chef Nina Matsunaga that they’re both perfect winter comfort foods.

Which is why the Black Bull, Sedbergh has launched Pie Mondays and Curry Tuesdays to provide their diners with the opportunity to tuck into something tasty and warming on these long winter evenings. Each Monday, evening from 5pm, head chef Nina Matsunaga and her team will serve up three different pies for you to try each week, including Nina’s Howgill Hereford Beef Pie, served with seasonal greens and mash, Fish Pie, served with seasonal greens and mash, and Courtyard Dairy Cheese and Onion Pie, served with seasonal greens and mash.

Pies and accompanying sides start from £18.50, or diners can enjoy any pie and a pint for just £22.50. Then to ring the changes every Tuesday evening from 5pm, Nina and her team will stir things up as they serve up three regularly changing curry options, such as a delicious Tamworth Pork Curry served with rice, a vegetarian Aubergine Katsu Curry, served with pickled daikon and rice or a classic fish curry featuring Wild halibut, king prawn, pollock khao soi served with crispy noodles.

Curries and accompanying rice or noodles start from £13.95. With a regularly changing pie menu served each Monday and a flavoursome curry menu served each Tuesday diners visiting the Black Bull can rest assured that they tuck into a selection of deliciously hearty winter warmers with all the trimmings and keep the long cold nights at bay.

Nina said: ‘’I’ve spent quite a bit of time perfecting and refining some of my favourite pie recipes and developing new ones that I can’t wait to bring out of the oven. And as our regular diners know every pie we serve is freshly made by hand using amazing and brim full of the amazing local ingredients that surround us.

“But that’s not all I’ve also revisited some Asian inspired curry recipes too, taking classic recipes from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Korea, Japan, and India and adding my own twist to each, using delicious local ingredients and carefully chosen herbs and spices to ring the changes and make things interesting.’’
