Cumbria to feature on new BBC Winter Walks series that airs next week

The picture-perfect setting of Dentdale in Cumbria will feature on BBC’s Winter Walks next week.

Winter Walks, the latest series from BBC England, captures the natural beauty of our landscapes, and allows its presenters a chance to reflect and find peace of mind.

The presenters include Reverend Richard Coles, Selina Scott, Lemn Sissay, Simon Armitage and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi.

Meeting locals and fellow walkers along the way, they each discover breathtaking views and forgotten histories, and offer personal insights on how they see the world around them.

This unique series was mostly shot pre-lockdown by the presenters themselves on hand-held 360 degree cameras, so audiences get an intimate and immersive view of each of the walks, mixed in with stunning aerial images.

Author and broadcaster Lemn Sissay will share his breathtaking Cumbrian journey into a world of snow-capped hills, blue skies and birdsong on the show which airs on December 15.

Starting high on the moorlands above Dent village, and carrying a handheld 360-degree camera, Lemn’s ramble takes in ancient drovers’ roads and the old postman’s path, with breathtaking winter views in every direction.

Meeting locals, including a farmer who collects vintage tractors and a lone bagpiper, Lemn is inspired by the landscape and reflects on the power of being immersed in nature.

After a challenging climb to England’s highest mainline train station, Dent, Lemn reflects that he must find time to walk and explore the countryside more.

Filmed in the North of England, the series invites viewers to allow their minds to glide gently along, and to take inspiration from the experience of our walkers.

Audiences will be able to relax and unwind with walks that offer unique perspectives on majestic landscapes from the Yorkshire Dales, East Coast of Yorkshire, Cumbria, North York Moors and Robin Hood’s Bay.

Aisling O’Connor, Head of TV Commissioning for BBC England said: “I’m very proud of Winter Walks. It showcases the fabulous landscape of the North of England and was ahead of its time, before everyone was out walking for their mental health and well-being. We need a series like this now, more than ever.

“They are perfect programmes to sit back, relax and unwind to. The crunch of the leaves underfoot, the sound of bird call and the contemplation of the presenters allows viewers to experience the outdoors in the comfort of their own homes. We are bringing glorious nature right into your front room.”

Winter Walks was made for BBC England and produced by Cy Chadwick at Atypical.

Watch Winter Walks on BBC One on December 15 regionally or catch up on the BBC iPlayer.
