Japanese Papercut Workshop

6 September @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

£85

In this hands-on workshop, you will practice the beautiful art of Japanese Paper cutting. ‘Kirie’ first appeared in Japan in the 7th Century as an import from the Chinese mainland and literally translates as “to cut picture”. It is the art of making pictures by cutting paper. In this mindful and session, professional artist Pui Lee will help you to create your own unique design to be cut into paper to create a wonderful artwork to take home with you. The process is great for visual-arts lovers, those with an interest in traditional East Asian art-forms, as well as those who just want to try something different. Suitable for beginners. No prior experience necessary.

About your tutor:

Based in Gateshead, Pui Lee is a British-born Hakka Chinese artist and arts educator, working throughout the North of England. Trained in a multitude of disciplines, her artistic practice is wide-ranging and she works using an interdisciplinary approach across both traditional and contemporary 2D and 3D artforms. Over the years, Pui Lee has exhibited and sold work both nationally and internationally.

“Paper is such a fantastic medium to work with! I love working directly with materials and I enjoy the physicality of the cutting and folding process when working with paper to create striking images or sculptures for others to enjoy. Get ready to be marvelled at how a single piece of paper can be transformed into a wonderful artwork! At my workshops, I aim to inspire and ’empower others through creativity’ so that everyone can achieve their goals.”

Artist Pui Lee is an experienced artist and arts educator; and has been commissioned to teach creative workshops for many high-profile and smaller independent arts, cultural and heritage organisations throughout the UK.
