Summer Solstice Sunset Hike to Wansfell Pike, 20th June

20 June @ 8:00 pm - 11:50 pm

Distance  – 5 Miles

Time  – 3 1/2  hours

Elevation  482m

Lead by Mark Eddy

The longest day of the year is also very often a fine and sunny day here in the Lake District. Making it the perfect time to watch the sunset from a mountain summit.

From: £35.00

Looking down on the bustling Lakeland town of Ambleside is the shapely mountain of Wansfell Pike. We will meet in Ambleside at 8pm for a short briefing before setting off up the steep, but well travelled footpath leading directly to the summit. The pace set will be leisurely so a few rests can be enjoyed along the way, allowing us to soak up the views to Loughrigg and over to the Fairfield and Red Screes mountains.

We aim to arrive at the summit (482m) by around 9.15/9.30pm which is in good time for sunset. Views from the summit are magnificent, with all of Windermere on show as well as so much of the Lake District and as far as the Yorkshire Dales.

We will start our descent back to Ambleside at around 10.30pm and aim to be back in the town by 11.30pm.

What to bring:

  • Waterproof jacket & over trousers
  • Hat & gloves
  • Warm clothing
  • Walking boots / sturdy footwear
  • Snacks and a hot drink
  • Water – at least 1 litre
  • Backpack suitable for carrying the above kit
  • Personal medication (if applicable)
  • A Good Torch / Headtorch

Mark is a qualified Mountain Leader who has worked extensively in the Lakeland mountains and throughout Europe for 18 years. The Lake District is home and he knows these mountains extremely well.
