Kate Garraway has given a heartbreaking update on her husband Derek Draper, revealing she doesn’t know how much he can recover from his battle with coronavirus.
As the UK went into a national lockdown in March 2020, Derek – from Chorley – was rushed to hospital after contracting the virus, before being placed into an induced coma.
While now testing negative for the virus, Derek remains in hospital and Good Morning Britain host Kate is uncertain about whether he will recover at all, reports the Express.
Kate explained: “The vaccine is here now, so everybody is hoping that will help Covid, I think, and help us regain some normality.
“It’s been really tough for us. Derek got really sick in the beginning of March.
“Even though we’re hoping [he] can recover, it’s taking a very, very long time.”
Speaking on the 5 Years Time Podcast, which was recorded in 2020, Kate added: “We don’t know how much he can recover.
“So that’s impacted on us obviously dramatically. So, it’s been really difficult.”
Derek’s battle with the virus is one of the longest in the UK and Kate is currently unable to visit her husband due to the latest lockdown.
Kate recently spoke about how she has struggled as “single parent” while looking after daughter Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 11.
The journalist has turned to GMB co-star Ranvir Singh for help and support as she makes decisions about her children’s future.
She told Good Housekeeping: “I’m not sure I am coping! I honestly don’t know how single mums do it; it’s just so hard.
“A lot of the time I find myself thinking, ‘What would Derek say?’ and ‘What would Derek do?’
“I’m lucky that I’m being supported by lots of friends, too, and Ranvir [Singh from GMB] has been really helpful because she’s been operating as a single mum since her son, Tushaan, was very little.
“I asked her, ‘How do you do it?’ and she said, ‘You just have to accept that you can’t do everything.’”
Kate is still working on GMB and hosting her Smooth Radio show after taking time off when Derek first went into hospital.
Her colleagues and friends have been offering their support to Kate while she continues to update fans on her husband’s recovery.
After Christmas, she told Good Morning Britain viewers: “It’s been a strange time. I’ve been a bit low since Christmas, physically low.
“I felt slightly, physically at the end of my tether and kind of had to regroup a bit. This week, a friend of mine’s mother-in-law, who was 51, so younger than me died from Covid.
“She got it at Christmas – it’s making me feel emotional,” Kate said as she was seen trying to fight back the tears.
“And she just went down very quickly and she died. I just thought, ‘I cannot believe that here we are, so far on.’”
She continued: “Derek is still ravaged by the effects of Covid way back in March, his recovery is incredibly uncertain.
“I’m trying to look for new things and new ways and talking to doctors about what we can do for him.
“Meanwhile, people are still dying in extraordinary numbers, people that aren’t older, that haven’t got underlying conditions and it is just unbearable.
“People like you Piers and you Susanna say all the time, ‘You’re an inspiration to keep going’. I don’t think that I am.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
