Love Island star Jacques O’Neill, from Cumbria, has quit the show in an expected move after he said he was not being himself on the show and could not fake “being ok” anymore.
It was announced yesterday (July 12) that the 23-year-old from Barrow had quit the show and his reasons for doing so would be aired in last night’s episode. Jacques had been making trying attempts to win back Paige Thorne after it was revealed he kissed Cheyanne Kerr while Paige was away in Casa Amor.
On Monday night, Adam Collard entered the villa as a bombshell after he was voted out from series four in 2018. His return has been slammed by Women’s Aid after they accused him of displaying clear signs of ‘gaslighting and emotional abuse’ during his 2018 stint on the show. The 6’5 Geordie soon caught the attention of Paige who said she felt hurt by Jacques behaviour during Casa Amor.
Emotions were high throughout the hour-long episode on Tuesday night. Jacques is seen crying while telling Paige he wishes he could continue his journey with her, but he is instead going home in a bid to get back to himself.
After gathering the other islanders at the fire pit, Jacques explains the reason for his sudden departure. He explains: “I feel like lately I just can’t be myself, so I’m trying my best, but I’m not a fake person and I’m not going to start faking things and act like I’m okay when things inside aren’t actually ok.
“So, I’m going to be leaving today. I just can’t stick around not being myself, its not fair to me and its definitely not fair to Paige. For me and Paige to work, I need to be my best and if that means removing myself from the situation and wait for Paige when she gets out, that’s what I’m going to do.”
On his way out, Jacques vows to pick Paige up from the airport once she’s finished on the show and he takes a moment to cry with best Island Pal, Luca, about his departure. Luca adds: “Its just not going to be the same without you”
He then tells Paige “I want you to be my girlfriend, I’ll wait, I’ll be counting down the days until you’re out.”
Fans took to Twitter to share their opinions on Jacques departure, with former contestant Chloe Burrows writing: “You know what…. Love island is SO intense like if you lose your head it’s hard! I do feel sorry for Jacques feel like he’s scrambling”
