Jimmy Carr slammed by Head Gypsy Billy Welch over Holocaust comments as pressure builds to cancel Kendal gig

The leader of the Gyspy and Traveller community has slammed comedian Jimmy Carr for poking fun at the slaughter of Gypsy women and children during the Holocaust – and said his looming Cumbria gig should be axed.

The controversial clip from Carr comes from his latest Netflix show, titled His Dark Material, showing the comedian making extreme comments about the Traveller community and members of it being killed during the Second World War.

As a supposed punchline, Carr makes a disparaging remark about the deaths of thousands of Gypsies at the hands of the Nazis, saying it was a “positive” of the Holocaust.

During the Netflix special, Carr asks the audience “you paid to see some edgy comedy, right?” – and was greeted by cheer from his fans.

But Billy Welsh, the Shera Rom, told CumbriaLive the words from Carr were sick and not a laughing matter.

Billy, who is a regular at Appleby Horse Fair, said: “Many of my people were killed during the Holocaust, lost of them weren’t counted in the numbers as there camps were destroyed.

“We’ve been told how Nazis killed and raped women and children they cut open women’s bellies while they were pregnant and ripped the babies out.

“How can anyone find this funny?

“Carr should hear and see the scale of the slaughter for himself, then apologise when he understands the hurt and fear he has caused.”

Billy added: “His so-called joke was so offensive because there are many still living who witnessed the brutality of what happened, and many more who lost their families in barbarous and sadistic murders. Making a joke of it is too painful.”

Anti Racist Cumbria, a registered charity established to identify, challenge, tackle and end racism in Cumbria, revealed how it understands Carr has been invited to attend Auschwitz to be educated on the issue.

A spokesperson said: “We understand Gypsy Leader Billy Welch has invited Jimmy Carr to attend the Auschwitz death camp memorial and join the annual commemoration of the slaughter of Gypsies by the Nazis.

“We hope Jimmy Carr accepts this kind invitation – which the Gypsy community did not need to extend – and that he learns the true impact of his hateful words.

“While we wish the comedian had never used these hateful racist words we hope it has shone a light on the true way that Gypsies are viewed in our society. We stand in solidarity with the Gypsy community.”

Jimmy Carr is set to have a gig in Kendal Leisure Centre on March 20 but Billy Welsh feel this should be stopped.

CumbriaLive has contacted the leisure centre, which is run by South Lakeland District Council, for comment on the gig.
