Kirkby Lonsdale cafe owner tells customer to ‘check out menus’ after unusual veggie food warning

The owner of a cafe in Kirkby Lonsdale has shared a brilliant response to a guest who warned others their cafe is ‘not a vegetarian tea shop’.

Number Forty Four of Main Street in Kirkby Lonsdale is a distinctive purple cafe in the town centre.

They are known for their bacon butties and scones and have been on a winter break from January 4 until this Saturday (February 5).

Number Forty Four is rated #4 of 25 restaurants in Kirkby Lonsdale following 377 reviews from previous guests. Of those 377 reviews, 268 customers rated Number Forty Four as ‘excellent’.

One guest, user E5700XXstephend, rated the cafe 5-stars today (February 2) and said the top-rated cafe has become their ‘regular’.

They wrote: “Become my regular coffee house. We both love Number 44 as not only does it make the best Cappuccino ever with the tastiest little shortcake biscuit but the owners and staff are really friendly too. The food has always been good every time we have eaten there .”

A second guest, user HelenBarker, reviewed the spot in December and said it is ‘a gem of a restaurant in the main road through the town centre’.

She said: “Shown to the clean table in the corner, in the window, by the friendly staff. Menu is very varied and what’s more, moderate prices!

“The portions of everything were very generous, I had the smashed avocado on sourdough with mushrooms, rocket leaves and a poached egg. Just delicious. Great menu for teas, served hot in a glass square teapot which was novel. Coffee was from a medium blend and also tasty. No room for any baked goods but we were told by a local lady that they were made by Gaby and were worth tasting! Leave room for some cake is my advice!

“Would not hesitate in recommending this clean, efficient and quick service of fresh ingredients well sourced, used in the food.”

But alongside their praising reviews, one guest left a quite bizarre two-star review for Number Forty Four last summer, pointing out to prospective customers it is ‘NOT a vegetarian teashop’.

User 09766GEjoycem said: “Used google to find a possible vegetarian/vegan teashop in Kirkby Lonsdale. Number Forty Four came up. This cafe is NOT, however, vegetarian/vegan. It simply has a few options, like most cafe’s now, that are non-meat.”

The guest then pointed out a ‘plaque’ on the wall allegedly showing ‘the names of dead sea-creatures’.

“Not something a vegetarian or vegan wishes to see while eating (or, indeed, at any time),” they added.

“In other respects the place was OK,” they continued, “although nothing to write home about.”

They then added: “But the main thing I wanted to emphasise is that it is NOT a vegetarian/vegan cafe.”

Gabor K, the owner at Number Forty Four, responded the following day.

“Thank you for clarifying that we are NOT a vegetarian tea shop. We never said or intended to suggest we are. Number Forty Four is a café, that serves vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options along with other food.

“Sorry if you find this and the names of sea creatures offensive. I recommend to refine your search next time before sitting in a restaurant or café to avoid disappointment.”

Number Forty Four re-opens on Saturday. They offer sit in and takeaway for those looking to eat there.
