Man asked teen girl personal questions and stroked her arm while waiting for bus in Whitehaven

A man reportedly accosted a teenage girl and stroked her arm while asking personal questions in Whitehaven.

The incident took place outside the Wilkinson store on Lowther Street at around 3.40pm on March 18. It was reported that a 17-year-old girl was was accosted by an older man whilst she was waiting for a bus.

Officers say they are investigating the incident and the man is described as being in his 60s and possibly intoxicated at the time of the incident. It was also reported that the man repeatedly stroked the girl on the arm whilst asking her personal questions.

Cumbria Police are investigating the incident as an assault and are keen to speak to two members of the public who are believed to have assisted the girl at the time of the incident. They are also believed to have made comments relating to the identity of the man in question.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Police are investigating an incident which took place on 18 March at around 3.40pm outside the Wilkinson store on Lowther Street, Whitehaven.

“A 17-year-old girl was accosted by an older man whilst she was waiting for a bus. The suspect is described as being in his 60s and possibly intoxicated at the time of the incident.

“The man repeatedly stroked the girl on the arm whilst asking her personal questions.

“Officers are investigating the incident as an assault and are keen to speak to two members of the public who are believed to have assisted the girl at the time of the incident and are believed to have made comments relating to the identity of the man in question.”
