New Mayor dons the mayoral chains his late dad made almost fifty years ago

The new Mayor of Wigton has seen a shake up on the town council to help streamline how they work with the hope they will become a more efficient council in the future.

Christopher Scott has just been made Mayor of the town and also the chairman of the council. This comes as the county saw a huge shake-up and reorganisation of the councils in the county. Over the moon to have taken up the new dual role, he said: “I’m chuffed to bits and I really hope I will be able to make a difference in the town. It is also amazing to have Sandra Hobson as my deputy. She has done amazing things for Wigton and put a lot into her work.”

Taking on the role of Mayor has a special meaning for Chris. It was his dad and five others who were tasked with making the mayoral chains back in 1977.

He said: “It means the world to me to know that my dad had a hand in making these and now I get the chance to wear them. My dad joined the council in 1987 and he wanted the best for the town and now I get my chance.”

Chris’s dad, Harry Scott, was very popular in Wigton however he was killed in 2002 in a serious crash on the Wigton Bypass. After losing his dad, wearing the mayoral chains mean even more to Chris.
