Coronavirus infection rates in Cumbria continue to rise in five out of the six districts.
New figures released this evening by Public Health England show Barrow-in-Furness remains on ‘red alert’ status as its rate climbed to 77.6 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to September 23.
Any area with a rate over 50 is put into the highest government category.
A total of 52 cases were recorded in one week, up from 32 in the previous seven days to September 16.
Carlisle, Copeland and South Lakeland are on ‘amber alert’ status with infection rates over 30 while Eden has the lowest rate with 11.3.
It comes as a further 34 new cases were recorded across Cumbria in the last 24 hours, including 11 more in Barrow-in-Furness.
Other areas recording sharp increases in their seven-day rates include:
– Newcastle upon Tyne (up from 87.2 to 228.8, with 693 new cases)
– Pendle (up from 97.7 to 203.0 with 187 new cases)
– Sunderland (up from 78.9 to 180.0, with 500 new cases)
– Halton (up from 125.2 to 214.0 with 277 new cases)
– Sefton (up from 74.2 to 162.8, with 450 new cases)
Burnley has now overtaken Bolton to record the highest rate in England with 228 new cases in the seven days to September 23 – the equivalent rate of 256.4.
The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people. Data for the most recent three days (September 23-25) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.
The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 25 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
