A multi-agency response was deployed yesterday afternoon at Coniston Water
A father and son were rescued and treated for hypothermia yesterday after their canoe capsized in the Lake District. Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was deployed yesterday afternoon (April 12) after the canoe capsized in Coniston Water just before 1pm.
After the father and son were returned safely to shore, they are said to have been treated for hypothermia and they were handed over to the ambulance service. The rescue team were part of a multi-agency response as they helped police, coastguard and North West Ambulance Service with the incident, which took one hour and 15 minutes to resolve.
Taking to Facebook, the Mountain Rescue Team said: “It was a breezy afternoon with a mixture of cloud and sunshine, when we received a request from the Coastguard via Cumbria Police, asking us to attend an incident on Coniston Water.
“A father and son were in the water after their canoe capsized. Fortunately they were picked up from the water with the help of the ferry and the Boating Centre, and returned safely to the shore. We treated them both for hypothermia and they soon warmed up, and we handed over to the Ambulance Service on their arrival.
“This was a multi-agency tasking involving the Police, Coastguard (they have jurisdiction for any incident on Coniston Water as it is used by the public and has a passenger ferry), NWAS and Mountain Rescue.
“Three members attended (one was already at the Boating Centre) and the incident took 1 hr 15 mins.”
